The Burkhammer Family Letters consists of letters written between Joe and Geraldine Burkhammer while Joe Burkhammer was working in Michigan. It is arranged in chronological order starting with letters written by Joe Burkhammer with the final folder consisting of letters received by Joe Burkhammer.

Biographical Note
Joe Burkhammer was born in 1912. He married Geraldine Hendrix (b. 1919) in Greene County, Arkansas on December 12, 1936. Two years later they welcomed a daughter, Betty Ruth Burkhammer. Their second child, Joseph Burkhammer, was born in 1940.
Beginning in 1942, Joe left his family in Paragould, Arkansas to seek work in Michigan. During his time in Michigan, Joe worked a variety of odd jobs - including field work and factory work. Over the next 13 years, he regularly corresponded with his family in Arkansas and sent back the majority of each paycheck. He also made regular visits to see his family in Arkansas.

Abstract
In order to support his family, Joe Burkhammer moved from Greene County, Arkansas to Davis, Michigan. There he obtained work and was able to send money back home to his wife and two children. This collection contains the letters from Joe to his wife Geraldine during the times that he was away working in Michigan and letters that Joe received from Geraldine and their children.

This collection was transferred from the Arkansas State University Museum to Archives & Special Collections in 2013. Further additions to the collection are not expected.
