The Craighead County Citizens for McClellan Collection was formed by the 1972 the Craighead County Citizens Committee created to campaign for the election of John Little McClellan to the United States Senate. This collection contains information documenting McClellan's successful campaign.

Biographical Note

John Little McClellan was born on a farm near Sheridan, Arkansas in 1896. He was active in local democratic politics and served in several public offices both at the state and federal level. During World War I, he enlisted in the army and served as first lieutenant in the aviation section of the Signal Corps. He was city attorney for Malvern, Arkansas from 1920 to 1926, after which he was elected prosecuting attorney for Hot Springs County. McClellan sought and won election to the United States House of Representatives in 1934 and re-election in 1936. In 1942, he entered and won the United States Senate race and served as the Arkansas Senator for 35 years until his death in 1977.

Abstract

John Little McClellan was a city attorney for Malvern, Arkansas before being elected prosecuting attorney for Hot Springs County. He served in the U. S. House of Representative from Arkansas’s 6th congressional district from 1935 to 1939. He then served in the U. S. Senate from 1943 to his death in 1977. This collection contains materials created by Craighead County Citizens Committee to campaign for McClellan’s re-election campaign.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into 3 series.

Series 1: Receipts and Expenditures. The “Receipt and Expenditures” series contains donation information, bank reconciliations, and expenditure receipts. It is divided into two subseries. Subseries 1.1, “Receipts,” contains donation information and deposit slips. Subseries 1.2, “Expenditures,” pertains to the expenses of the McClellan campaign.

Series 2: Media Coverage. The “Media Coverage” series pertains to materials related to print and television coverage of John McClellan’s re-election campaign. It is divided into two subseries. Subseries 2.1, “Print Media,” contains copies of newspaper advertisement and coverage of McClellan. Subseries 2.2, “Television Media,” contains a transcript from a television panel pertaining to McClellan.

Series 3: Campaign Tools and Facts. The “Campaign Tools and Facts” series contains materials pertaining to McClellan’s re-election campaign.
