Biographical Note

In February, 1889, Charles A. Stuck relocated his family from Danville, Illinois to Jonesboro, Arkansas so his wood planning operation would be closer to his source of goods: the hardwood lumber harvested from the Ozark Mountains. Charles' sixteen-year-old son, William, began investing in real estate.

William's investments included ownership of at least one rental property, a home, and shares of the newly organized Jonesboro Building and Loan Association. William also owned interest in three banks in Jonesboro and one in St. Louis, Missouri. At 21 years old, William joined the family business by purchasing $1,100 of stock in his father's lumber mill.

Charles was a founding member of the First Presbyterian Church and William was a leader in the Methodist Church where he was President of the Sunday School and Chairman of the Board of Stewards. William also served on the Executive Board of Hendrix-Henderson College in Conway, Arkansas; Henderson-Brown College in Arkadelphis, Arkansas; and Galloway Women's College in Searcy, Arkansas. These three colleges were later merged into Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
