The Johnnie J. Herman Collection primarily consists of documents and papers compiled by Herman during his employment at Missouri Pacific Railroad Company. These documents include employee information, company operations, union activities, periodical clippings, personal documents, and artifacts.

Biographical Note

Johnnie J, Herman was born in Forrest City, Arkansas on August 15, 1907. He was a lifelong resident of Wynne, Arkansas where he began working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company at 17 as a “call boy.” He married Fannie Pauline Howell on June 6, 1928. He spent over forty years working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company, working in various positions and advancing to conductor/brakeman. He retired in 1972. Herman died on August 12, 1995 in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Abstract

Johnnie J. Herman worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company from the 1940s through the 1970s in various positions. The documents in this collection were compiled by Herman during the time he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railway Company.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into four series.

Series 1: Missouri Pacific Railroad Company. The “Missouri Pacific Railroad Company” series covers the employment of Johnnie J. Herman with the company. This series is divided into three subseries. Subseries 1.1, “Employee Information,” contains information related to employees of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company. Subseries 1.2, “Company Operations,” contains documents with information on the history and operation of the Missouri Pacific Railway Company. Documents include operation and rules and instructions regarding the use of facilities and equipment, and operation forms. Subseries 1.3, “Artifacts,” contains photographs, painting, and a calendar.

Series 2: Union Activities. The “Union Activities” series contains information on Herman’s activities with railway unions. This series is divided into two subseries. Subseries 2.1, “Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen,” contains documents related to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman including its constitution, history, and membership information. Subseries 2.2, “United Transportation Union,” consists of information pertaining to the union.

Series 3: Periodicals. The “Periodicals” series consists of magazines published by railroad companies and workers association and newspaper articles on railroad services.

Series 4: Personal Documents: The “Personal Documents” series contains Johnnie J. Herman’s personal documents.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was donated to Arkansas State University Museum and later transferred to the Archives and Special Collection, Dean B. Ellis Library.

Accruals

Further additions to the collection are not expected.
