Scope and Content Note

This collection primarily consists of business and personal papers, receipts, and statements from four members of the Warner family. Included are some designs and correspondence pertaining to patents Thomas D. Warner developed, receipts and statements pertaining to the Warner's businesses and personal affairs by Sarah J. Warner, and personal correspondences and ephemera from Edward M. and Marion P. Warner.

Biographical Note

Thomas Duane Warner

Thomas D. Warner was born around March 13, 1878 in Craighead, Arkansas to Samuel A. Warner and Sarah J. Warner nee Culberhouse. He married Mary Werdna Mathes on June 10, 1903 and had two sons, Thomas D. Warner, Jr. and Edward M. Warner. Warner was an entrepreneur who was a member of one of Jonesboro's pioneer families. He died on December 14, 1928 in Jonesboro at the age of 50.

Sarah Jane (Sallie J.) Culberhouse

Sarah J. Culberhouse was born around August 9, 1855 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to Thomas D. Culberhouse and Sarah E. Coleman. She married Samuel A. Warner, a banker, hotel operator, and heavy land owner, in 1874. They had two sons, Samuel A. Warner, Jr. and Thomas D. Warner. After her husband's death, she helped operate some of the Warner's business interests. She survived both her sons and died on June 13, 1936 in Jonesboro.

Edward Mathes Warner

Edward M. Warner was born on December 24, 1906 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to Thomas D. Warner and Mary Werdna Mathes. He graduated A & M College (Arkansas State University today) and attended University of Arkansas where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma Chi fraternity. He married Marion P. Stafford on December 1, 1928. At the beginning of the Second World War, Warner flew for Pan American World Airways in Africa. From 1943 to 1966, he worked for the Civil Aeronautics Administration and then the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), taking him and Stafford to Washington, D. C., Buenos, Aires, Argentina, and other places around the world. He retired to Springdale, Arkansas in 1969 with his wife. Warner died in Springdale on April 12, 2001.

Marion Pleasant Stafford

Marion P. Stafford was born on September 15, 1908 in Springdale, Arkansas to John P. Stafford, owner and founder of Springdale News, and Marion Myrtle Murphy. She was salutatorian of Springdale High School class of 1925. She attended University of Arkansas where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She spent some time working for her father at the Springdale News. On December 1, 1928, Stafford married Edward M. Warner and moved to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. She traveled throughout the United States and other places around the world due to Warner's FAA assignments. In 1969, she moved back to Springdale with her husband where she was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and supported fundraisers. Stafford died on December 5, 2008.

Abstract

The Warner family were a prominent and a founding family of Jonesboro, Arkansas. In the early part of the 20th century, the family were entrepreneurs and one of the largest landowners of the area. This collection consists of business and personal papers, receipts, and statements from four members of the Warner family.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in three series.

Series 1: Patents. The "Patent" series contains the drawings, designs, and correspondence pertaining to inventions and ideas Thomas D. Warner developed and patented by the United States. This series is arranged chronologically with unknown patent correspondence at the end.

Series 2: Financial and Legal Records. The "Financial and Legal Records" series consists of business and personal receipts and statements, primarily addressed to or about Sarah J. Warner nee Culberhouse. This series is arranged chronologically.

Series 3: Personal Papers. The "Personal Papers" series primarily consists of correspondence to and from Edward M. Warner and Marion P. Warner nee Stafford. It also includes certificates and acknowledgements, ephemera, and some photographs.

Immediate Source of Acquistion

This collection was originally donated to the Arkansas State University Museum by Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Wallis on April 3, 1968. These items were later transferred to Archives & Special Collections. Due to the nature of its acquisition and transfer, this collection was artificially assembled.

Accruals

Further additions to the collection are not expected.
