Historical Note

KAIT-8 is a regional television station in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Its broadcast area covers Northeast Arkansas and Southeastern Missouri. KAIT was founded as a venture of George T. Hernreich, a businessman from Fort Smith, Arkansas, who believed there was a need for a local television station in Northeast Arkansas. Unlike most television stations, it only received one VHF license because it was sandwiched between several other channels in Springfield, Memphis, Cape Girardeau, and Little Rock.

KAIT first signed on as an independent television station at 3:30PM on July 15, 1963, with its first broadcast a newscast followed by Indian Fighter starring Kirk Douglas. Due to having no network affiliation to provide programing, KAIT relied on a small package of black and white movies and locally produced programs. These programs included “Romper Room”, “Dance Party”, “Studio Wrestling”, “Gene Williams Country Junction”, and several country music programs. In 1965, KAIT became affiliated with ABC-TV nationwide television network and aired its first color broadcast in 1966. It continued to be the only television station serving Jonesboro until KTEJ signed on in May 1976.

Locally produced regional newscasts, sports, and weather reports are some of the most-watched programs on KAIT. It features more than twenty-four hours of locally produced newscast each week with over four hours during the weekday and one hour on the weekends. Its news coverage includes Craighead, Clay, Greene, Jackson, Lawrence, Randolph, and Sharp counties, along with several counties in Southeastern Missouri.

The Hernreich family sold the station to Channel Communications in 1984 and then sold to Cosmo Broadcasting in 1986. The station was sold to Raycom Media in 2005 and then merged with Gray Television in 2018. In 2015, KAIT began carrying programming from NBC and The CW in 2018.
