Scope and Content Note

This collection includes a selection of items depicting the Rosenfield family. It consists mainly of correspondence between Marguerite Rosenfield and her future husband, Julius Jacobs, in the early to mid-1920s along with various correspondence among their family up to 1966. This correspondence is mainly of a personal nature, relating to the daily lives and activities of Marguerite Rosenfield, Julius Jacobs, and various family members or friends. This collection also includes greeting and holiday cards, photographs, certificates and awards, papers indicating community and religious participation, and newspaper clippings concerning family, friends, and notable events.

Biographical Note

Julius Jacobs (Circa 1905-October 25, 1970) was a Jonesboro businessman originally from Nashville, Tennessee. He married Marguerite Rosenfield in 1925. He owned and assisted in operating several Jonesboro businesses until his death, including his father in law’s department store, Jay Jewelry, and Jacobs Travel Service, the latter two of which he operated with his wife. He served in the army during World War II. Jacobs participated in several Northeast Arkansas civic bodies; he was a former president of the Jonesboro Lions Club and served on several state committees. He was also active in Jonesboro’s Jewish community; he was a former president of Temple Israel and served on its board, and was a former president and secretary of B’nai B’rith.

Marguerite Jacobs née Rosenfield (Circa 1904-April 14, 1969) was born to Rose and Sam Rosenfield and a lifelong resident of Jonesboro. She married Julius Jacobs in 1925. Together they operated Jay Jewelry and Jacobs Travel. She was heavily involved with Jonesboro’s Jewish community. She served as president of the Temple Sisterhood and superintendent of religious education at Temple Israel, and was a former president of the Elise Shoenberger Chapter of B’nai B’rith. She was also active in several civic organizations, including Altrusa, which aims at funding civic projects for communities in need.

Rose (Rosie) Rosenfield (Circa 1878-June 18, 1971) was born in Romania but spent most of her life in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She was known for her activity in Jonesboro’s Jewish community at Temple Israel and for being the wife of Sam Rosenfield, a prominent local businessman.

Abstract

The Rosenfield family was a notable Jonesboro family known for their involvement in Temple Israel and several Jonesboro businesses in the 20th century. This collection is a selection of materials highlighting the family.

Arrangement

This collection is divided into two series:

Series 1: Personal Correspondence. This series predominantly contains correspondence between Marguerite Rosenfield and Julius Jacobs, and additional correspondence between the Rosenfield and Jacobs families.

Series 2: Personal Papers. This series is a selection of papers relating to the Rosenfield-Jacobs family, including Julius Jacobs’s personal papers, greeting cards, photos, invitations, certificates of donation, awards, materials relating to community activities, and newspaper clippings.
